OD SMECA DO UMJETNOSTI - Susan Meyerhoff Sharples in Croatia

POST artist Susan Meyerhoff Sharples recently developed an artist exchange linked to childhood toys. Inspired by an experience at a fairy-tale grotto during her residency with POST in Linz, Austria, Susan began to research people's memories of their toys.

Several artists responded to her call-out, and seeing a link between their work and their well-loved toy, Susan asked them to create a piece of work in response. Artists who responded from Croatia invited Susan to exhibit the works at the Loza Gallery, Medulin.



As a result of this visit, Susan created 'SUSTENANCE -feeds the body and the soul'. On this encounter Susan says;

"Whilst I was there I was commissioned to create a site specific piece from found objects. It was to reflect the town and its community. I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the people whilst I was there. I was given fresh fish from the fishing boats, wild asparagus from the coastal flora and vegetables grown in their gardens. For the main structure I used two pieces of wood previously part of a fishing boat, mesh from the mosquito net of an old door and garden ties. Jointly these elements epitomised the community and how it respects and works with nature and its resources."

POST artists features at Threshold Festival

Susan Meyerhoff Sharples, Claire Weetman and Robyn Woolston all exhibited work as part of the Threshold festival at Liverpool's CUC 11-13 February 2011.

University of the West of England Research Repository, Bristol has accepted 'ET IN ARCADIA EGO: THERE IS DEATH EVEN IN UTOPIA' (2010) into its archive.

Artists at work

A feature on the practice of POST artist Cecilia Kinnear appears in the national magazine for John Lewis Partnership this January:

Cecilia Kinnear creates conceptual art, including an installation for Liverpool's 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations.

The Warhol-inspired work saw 2008 tins of scouse (a traditional Liverpool stew) rather than Campbell's soup, on display around the city.

The John Lewis Liverpool Partner used to make her living as an artist - but now enjoys the freedom to create work without commercial restraints.

'I've continued my art practice alongside my career in John Lewis,' she says. 'There's less pressure to sell my art, so I'm able to explore concepts and branch out into different media.'

This means she rarely works in her studio these days, and is as likely to start thinking up ideas while sitting in a café or out running.

John Lewis is also often a source of inspiration. 'At work, I'm always thinking about brands, about the way people behave... it really influences my art and sparks new ideas.'

Her art has taken her far from home. 'I helped set up an artists' collective called POST (www.postliverpool.com) and we've followed the Capital of Culture around Europe, from Liverpool in 2008 to Linz in Austria, and then to Istanbul this year,' she says.

Cecilia acknowledges the role the Partnership plays in her work/art balance. 'I've received a Bursary of Excellence from the business (which provides support and financial help to Partners who meet specific requirements). 'The commitment is two-way,' she says. 'From me to the business, and back again.'

Trading Station

POST are happy to announce their next project 'Trading Station', which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey in 2011.

This follows on from their success with riPOSTe, which saw exchanges and exhibitions in the cities of Linz and Liverpool in 2010. 'Trading Station' continues POST's work with European Capital of Culture cities, with the aim of extending the cultural focus on a city beyond it's title year.

More details about the project will be announced during early 2011.

Art Merseywide - Liverpool Conservation Centre

POST artists Amanda Oliphant and Claire Weetman have each had work selected for Art Merseywide at Liverpool Conservation Centre. This exhibition draws 9 of the best works from each of the open submission exhibitions across the Merseyside area.

Amanda is exhibiting one of her collages, previously exhibited at Global Studios at the Bluecoat, Liverpool as part of POST's artist exchange with Linz, Austria. Claire Weetman's 'Passing, Watching, Waiting, Following II' is a drawing produced during an intervention in the main square of the city of Linz that tracks and traces movement using graphite marks.
