TRADING STATION issue 1
TRADING STATION offers a platform for physical and online sharing for the development and production of creative, pan-European dialogues rooted within exchange. Liverpool and Istanbul, twinned by Capital of Culture status, are the locations for TRADING STATION. The 9 artists involved will share ideas and experiences physically through travel and making art works, and will exchange images, text or audio virtually via social media.
TRADING STATION is POST's second project, it seeks to uncover methods for artists to work together across different countries, making the most of personal relationships and finding useful ways to develop work together using virtual methods. 17 May 2012 sees the launch of the first of four newspaper publications, which provide a space to share the development process of this exchange model with a wider audience in both Turkey and the UK. The results of this exchange process will culminate in an exhibition at Curve Gallery during Liverpool Biennial 2012.
POST’s five aims for TRADING STATION are:
1. To set up both virtual & physical spaces and times for TRADING STATION
2. Further POST's work in the field of professional female art practice
3. Develop individual practice & interdisciplinary methods
4. Develop the legacy of European Capitals of Culture
5. Make our processes and outcomes transparent

Crowdfunding
Post member Amanda Oliphant recently attended Making and Funding Work: a Crowdfunding seminar provided by a-n-the artists information company and WeDidThis, hosted by Castlefield Gallery, Manchester.
Crowdfunding is a platform for the professional development needs of enhancing a projects pitching and fundraising techniques. Post are currently creating Trading Station, a series of temporary spaces and times for exchange and dialogue between Istanbul pratitioners and their own Liverpool practices and are therefore seeking out dedicated funding opportunities.

The shortlist was whittled down from the 48 entries received by the organisers following an open call fornominations. The highly qualified panel of judges, which this year comprises of: Mike Stubbs, CEO and Director of FACT, Laura Davis, Arts Editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, Sook-Kyung Lee, Curator at Tate Liverpool,and last year’s winner artist Markus Soukup, with Ian Jackson of ArtinLiverpool.com as chair.

Invisible City, work in Schiedam, NL by Claire Weetman
POST member Claire Weetman recently travelled to Schiedam, Netherlands to produce a new performance drawing at an event called Invisible City. This event, held at Ruimte in Beweging, brought together artists and performers and saw Claire produce three new drawing interventions.
Motus:Immotus is a development from the work 'Passing, Watching, Waiting, Following' and 'Static:Moving' which were produced on Hauptplatz, Linz as part of POST's riPOSTe exchange in Austria. Claire has since been awarded an Artists Access to Art Colleges residency with Salford University where she will develop Motus:Immotus for a UK audience.

OD SMECA DO UMJETNOSTI - Susan Meyerhoff Sharples in Croatia
Exhibition title: OD SMECA DO UMJETNOSTI

POST artist Susan Meyerhoff Sharples recently developed an artist exchange linked to childhood toys. Inspired by an experience at a fairy-tale grotto during her residency with POST in Linz, Austria, Susan began to research people's memories of their toys.
Several artists responded to her call-out, and seeing a link between their work and their well-loved toy, Susan asked them to create a piece of work in response. Artists who responded from Croatia invited Susan to exhibit the works at the Loza Gallery, Medulin.
As a result of this visit, Susan created 'SUSTENANCE -feeds the body and the soul'. On this encounter Susan says;
"Whilst I was there I was commissioned to create a site specific piece from found objects. It was to reflect the town and its community. I was overwhelmed by the hospitality of the people whilst I was there. I was given fresh fish from the fishing boats, wild asparagus from the coastal flora and vegetables grown in their gardens. For the main structure I used two pieces of wood previously part of a fishing boat, mesh from the mosquito net of an old door and garden ties. Jointly these elements epitomised the community and how it respects and works with nature and its resources."

Film accepted into University collection

University of the West of England Research Repository, Bristol has accepted 'ET IN ARCADIA EGO: THERE IS DEATH EVEN IN UTOPIA' (2010) into its archive.
The film was created as a direct result of the POST exchange with Linz during 2010 and with the kind support of the Mauthausen Memorial: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauthausen-Gusen_concentration_camp
As well as being kindly supported by an Arts Council England grant.

Artists at work
A feature on the practice of POST artist Cecilia Kinnear appears in the national magazine for John Lewis Partnership this January:Cecilia Kinnear creates conceptual art, including an installation for Liverpool's 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations.
The Warhol-inspired work saw 2008 tins of scouse (a traditional Liverpool stew) rather than Campbell's soup, on display around the city.
The John Lewis Liverpool Partner used to make her living as an artist - but now enjoys the freedom to create work without commercial restraints.
'I've continued my art practice alongside my career in John Lewis,' she says. 'There's less pressure to sell my art, so I'm able to explore concepts and branch out into different media.'
This means she rarely works in her studio these days, and is as likely to start thinking up ideas while sitting in a café or out running.
John Lewis is also often a source of inspiration. 'At work, I'm always thinking about brands, about the way people behave... it really influences my art and sparks new ideas.'
Her art has taken her far from home. 'I helped set up an artists' collective called POST (www.postliverpool.com) and we've followed the Capital of Culture around Europe, from Liverpool in 2008 to Linz in Austria, and then to Istanbul this year,' she says.
Cecilia acknowledges the role the Partnership plays in her work/art balance. 'I've received a Bursary of Excellence from the business (which provides support and financial help to Partners who meet specific requirements). 'The commitment is two-way,' she says. 'From me to the business, and back again.'

Trading Station
POST are happy to announce their next project 'Trading Station', which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey in 2011.This follows on from their success with riPOSTe, which saw exchanges and exhibitions in the cities of Linz and Liverpool in 2010. 'Trading Station' continues POST's work with European Capital of Culture cities, with the aim of extending the cultural focus on a city beyond it's title year.
More details about the project will be announced during early 2011.

Art Merseywide - Liverpool Conservation Centre
POST artists Amanda Oliphant and Claire Weetman have each had work selected for Art Merseywide at Liverpool Conservation Centre. This exhibition draws 9 of the best works from each of the open submission exhibitions across the Merseyside area.

Terribility Studios - Katriona Beales and Markus Soukup
POST associate artist Katriona Beales is exhibiting her series of manipulated record covers in an exhibition at The Lost Soul & Stranger Service Station, School Lane Liverpool. This work, previously unseen in the UK, has just returned from the latest POST exhibition at Galerie Maerz and Atelierhaus Salzamt in Linz, Austria.

Susan Meyerhoff Sharples in residence at Ars Electronica Linz
During her period of residence at Atelierhaus Salzamt , Austria Linz Electronica Center Danube which at night transforms into a coloured crystal illuminated by 40,000 light-emitting diodes that reflect a spectrum of colour across the river.
Susan spent her time working in the ‘FabLab’, experimenting with their unique desktop programmes linked to cutting edge fabrication equipment. She was supported by their extremely knowledgeable and helpful assistant who explained the possibilities of the fantastic equipment housed within the ‘FabLab’ where she took this wonderful opportunity to further develop her drawings and metal sculptures through the medium of card and Plexiglas.
Urban Interventions - Partners visit Liverpool
International Partners from the Urban Interventions project met in Liverpool in September 2010. POST took part in the residency opportunity offered by the programme at Atelierhaus Salzamt in mid-2010, and this visit was a chance for POST to build on the international connections afforded by this programme.
The partners visited the workspaces of Susan Meyerhoff Sharples in Elevator Studios and Amanda Oliphant and Cecilia Kinnear at 36 Seel Street, alongside visits to Static, The Co-operative and Royal Standard.

Linz< >Liverpool: How Much Exchange Can You Stand?
Tuesday 6 July 2010, saw the opening of 'Linz < > Liverpool: How Much Exchange Can You Stand?', an exhibition in two venues in Linz, Austria. Part of the riPOSTe project, it features the fourteen artists from the cities of Liverpool and Linz in a development from their recent participation in the Global Studio exhibition at Bluecoat, Liverpool.
How Much Exchange Can You Stand? takes place at Künstlervereinigung MAERZ and Atelierhaus Salzamt - the latter venue being the organisation where POST artists have used the residency facilities as part of the Urban Interventions programme.
Linz < > Liverpool: How Much Exchange Can You Stand? continues until 17th September 2010.
